Ontario Parents Advocating for Children with Cancer (OPACC)

Location: Barrie,
Ontario

Ontario Parents Advocating for Children with Cancer (OPACC) is a registered charity whose overall goal, since our establishment in 1995, is to be the parent voice for families with children diagnosed with cancer across Ontario. We support families through our signature in-hospital Parent Liaison support program – the only one of its kind in Ontario – where trained parents of children that have had cancer offer peer-to-peer support to other parents from a non-medical point of view through weekly drop-in support groups, one-on-one visits, financial support programs, and more. This program is currently operating out of SickKids in Toronto and Credit Valley Hospital in Mississauga, and we seek to expand it to other pediatric cancer treatment centres throughout Ontario. In addition to the in-hospital support provided through the Parent Liaison program, OPACC also works to build a network of local community-based Parent Support groups to ensure that families are supported once they are back home. Finally, we advocate on issues of importance to childhood cancer families such as special education needs, representing survivors, raising awareness, and more.
